The Northern Lights in Alaska

The Northern Lights in Alaska

Many people who have never been to Alaska have never experienced a display as powerful as the northern lights. Aurora borealis is the scientific name for this phenomenon. You may not even exactly understand what they look like, what causes them to happen or when the best time of year to view them in Alaska is.

The point of this article is to help shed some light on these questions and help better educate visitors to Alaska so that they may enjoy the amazing spectacle that is commonly know as the northern lights.

What causes the northern lights?Without getting too scientific there are several factors that come into play when discussing what causes the northern lights. When the sun experiences large explosions or flares there are large quantities or solar particles thrown into space. These particles form plasma clouds that usually take between two to three days to reach our earth. When the plasma clouds near the earth they are captured by the earth’s magnetic field and guided towards the earths two magnetic poles, the North Pole and the South Pole. As they travel closer to earth towards the two poles the plasma clouds are stopped by the earth’s atmosphere.

The atmosphere helps protects us from these deadly particles. When the solar particles are stopped by the atmosphere this collision creates an energy between the atmospheric gas particles and the solar particles. The energy is released in the form of a photon or a light particle.Millions of these light particles being released into our atmosphere at one time cause the northern lights. This helps explain why they appear to dance across the sky as they intensify or subside.

What do the northern lights look like in Alaska? In Alaska the closer you get to the North Pole the better of display you can see. Above the Arctic Circle there are amazing displays. However, living in Anchorage I have still seen many impressive displays of green and red lights in the night sky. The northern lights seem to shimmer and dance across the sky as they are displayed. The usual color is green but more intense displays will have red or purple in them. They almost appear as a ghostly cloud of light that rapidly moves, intensifies and subside during the display.Northern lights displays in Alaska can continue for several hours.

What is the best time of year to view the northern lights in Alaska? The winter months, October through March, are the best time frame to view the northern lights in Alaska simply due to the fact you will have some darkness. In the summer months it can stay light for nearly 24 hours. You must have darkness to witness this phenomenon happening. However, you should expect cold weather during this time period and be sure to bring clothes accordingly if you plan to stand outside and watch the northern lights.Viewing the northern lights is an experience everyone should have at least once in their life.

This truly amazing sight is almost mystical and hard to believe the first time you see it. In my opinion there is no better place than Alaska to witness the northern lights.

3 Spots To Take Time Off in Paris

One of my favorite pleasures when I am in Paris is to take some time off, pick up a good book, and hole up some place where I can be left alone with my old self. If you feel the same, these are three of my fave spots to do just that.

The China House

In America when we think of a social venue where to spend a couple of hours reading and sipping on some hot beverage, the local Starbucks shop comes to mind almost immediately. Starbucks is slowly building a beach head in Europe where Italian coffee dominates the espresso market, leaving very little room for the kind of brew Starbucks sells.

In other words, Starbucks shops do not abound in Paris. But there are many other venues of the sort, and sometimes much better ones. The China House (La Maison de la Chine) belongs to this latter category.

Standing at 76 rue Bonaparte, in the Saint Germain des Pres area, La Maison de la Chine offers tea lovers a perfect haven to taste various teas and nibble at a couple of 'macarons' (small cookies with a light cream spread within) and other pastries. The 'tea house' is open from 3:00 to 7:00 pm Monday to Saturday. Tasting sessions give you an opportunity to sip on some of the finest Chinese teas: Tieguanyin, Longjing, Yinzhen, and Shuixian. The tea is prepared along the lines of an ancient tradition with special bamboo utensils, clay teapot and water pot, a 'cup for smelling' and a 'cup for sipping'.

Should you also wish to have lunch there, their Shanghaï Cafe opens between 12:30 and 2:30 pm. Their courses are a mix between Chinese and Thai food, with some interesting flavors. The food doesn't come cheap (there are two options, one for €22, the other for €28) but quality is good.

The Luxembourg Gardens

Definitely one of my favorite areas in my teenage years. The Luxembourg Gardens are the Parisian version of London's Hyde Park and NYC's Central Park. It extends across a large section of the city, spreading over parts of several districts. The French Senate House was built along one of its sides.

Monikered 'le Luco' by the youth of the 6th district (a well-to-do crowd with its own social codes and exclusive parties), the Luxembourg Gardens are informally divided into sections.

In one of these, children can ride an old wooden-horse merry-go-round, and catch metal rings with short wooden sticks. Further away, there are a few tennis courts, and a puppet theater. The vast expanse of land facing the French Senate House features a water basin where youngsters float model sailboats.

One of the quietest spots of the Gardens borders the Rue d'Assas. It is shaded by old trees around which narrow alleys wrap up. Metal chairs line up the alleys, and it may become hard to find one unoccupied during summer as students love to hang around and study in this area. A perfect place for a quiet afternoon of reading or romantic strolling.

Meet Louis the 13th at Place des Vosges

Ensconced by four rows of 17th century mansions, Place des Vosges is probably best known for its art galleries. Those exhibit artworks of a more modern breed that the galleries which line up the famed Rue de Seine, near Saint-Germain-des-Pres.

To me however, Place de Vosges is mainly remarkable for its peaceful, miniature park. The 39 mansions around the Place shelter it from the traffic rumble coming from the Rue Saint Antoine (Southern side) and the Boulevard Beaumarchais (Eastern side). This sort of a rampart also serves as a wind-cutter during fall and springtime.

Mid-sized trees line up the fence around the symmetrically built park. At its center, a tree-circle in which stands a bronze statue of Louis the 13th who, we learn, died at age 33. Around the central circle, my target: one of four green lawns where I can unfold a spread, lay down, and read.

During summer, there are always a couple of classical and jazz formations playing under the nearby arcades. They play at a pretty good level which gives a nice touch to the local vibe.

Among the restaurants around the Place, I personally like 'Ma Bourgogne' at No. 19. They serve hearty meals for €25-35.

But that's just a few spotsThere is no shortage of quiet spots where to kill a couple of delicious hours in Paris. In fact I'll write about some more in the coming weeks.

When you are in Paris, take some time off to enjoy the city vibe differently; don't just roll with the Parisian hustle-bustle. I'll see you in a while with more food for thought.

Australian Travel : Beyond Amazing

More and more people are considering Australia travel than ever before. There are many great places to see in Australia and so much more to do than you may have imagined. When you go, you can find great deals if you look hard enough. I remember a deal I found once that included airfare to and from Australia as well as three domestic flights after you got there. That way, you could see quite a few places in the country at once. If you think you may only get one chance for Australia travel, this may be the way to go.
Many people think of visiting Sydney. Sydney is a popular destination, but it is not the only place worth visiting. When you think of Australia, think of the unique animals they have there, the great beaches, and the many natural wonders that you may not want to pass up. You will find that many Australia travel deals include some of or all of these things.
One of the most popular things people like to see in Australia is Ayers Rock. Actually, the rock is now called by its Aboriginal name Uluru, and you will find that most Australians do not call it Ayers Rock any longer. This area is actually a scared Aboriginal site, and you should use respect when you visit. You can see Uluru at sunset, which is said to be a spectacular site. There used to be a few companies that offered tours and even a meal under the stars near Uluru, though I am not sure this is still offered. You can easily find this information online if you look for Australia travel.
You may also want to visit Australia Zoo in Queensland. This zoo should be a must see for Australia travel. The zoo is owned by the Irwin family and they have done amazing things with what was once a small reptile park. Even though Steve Irwin has now passed on, you will still find his exuberance and his spirit alive in the zoo he loved so much. The animals are in natural habitats and are highly respected and lovingly cared for by the zoo employees.
You may also want surf when you consider Australia travel. There are so many great places to do this and the Gold Coast is one such place. Because most of the population of Australia lives near the coast, there are hundreds of beaches for you to see and discover. If you don’t want to see water or beach, you can see the Outback. This is the country area of Australia and offers some of the most beautiful landscapes. When you think of Australia travel, think of adventure, luxury and amazing memories

How to Find Caribbean Vacation Deals, Specials, and Bargains

It's hard to put a price on paradise, but nobody wants to spend more than they have to on their Caribbean vacation. Here's my easy guide to how to getting great Caribbean getaway deals, sales, bargains and specials, so you can spend more time on the beach and less worrying about the bill at the end of your trip!
Difficulty: Easy
Time Required: A few minutes periodically checking deals online.
Here's How:
Travel in the off-season. The best deals in the Caribbean are available from May to mid-December, with discounts of up to 40 percent off high-season rates at hotels and resorts. May and September-December are generally considered the shoulder season; the lowest prices are available June-August.
Go where the airlines go. Airfare prices in the Caribbean follow the basic laws of competition: they're cheaper to destinations served by multiple carriers. Puerto Rico, Nassau (Bahamas), Aruba, the Dominican Republic and Jamaica are examples of islands where you'll find many airlines and lower ticket prices. That helps keep overall trip costs down, particularly when you're booking hotel/air package deals (see below).
Check the travel deals online. Visit my site frequently for the latest bargains. Sign up for hotel and resort e-mail newsletters for info on Internet specials. Some hotel chains promise that the best rates can be found on their own websites.
Take advantage of hotel loyalty programs. Major resort chains like Marriott, Starwood, and Hilton continue to increase their presence in the Caribbean, meaning those loyalty points you earned on that weeklong business trip to Cleveland can be redeemed for some Caribbean R&R. You'll earn more points while you vacation, too!
Don't overlook small villas, inns, and paradores. Not only is it often cheaper to stay at small, locally run inns, youll have the chance to meet real residents of your island destination and get more immersed in island culture than you can at a mega-resort.
Stay at all-inclusive resorts. I have two words for you: "cost certainty." All-inclusives in the Caribbean run the gamut from modest to luxury, but this is a great way to avoid sticker-shock when you check out at the end of your stay. Most Caribbean all-inclusives include activities and basic water sports; some even include local tours and alcoholic drinks for one upfront price.
Seek out the 'bargain' islands. The Domincan Republic has the reputation of delivering the best bang for your buck in the Caribbean. Puerto Rico, especially, San Juan is also attractive for bargain-hunters.
Book package deals. Caribbean air-hotel packages designed by resorts, airlines, tour companies, and travel agents can often deliver better value than booking separately, especially in the high season.
Tips:
Book efficiency rooms and cook your own meals. The cost of food is the one thing that surprises most visitors to the Caribbean. To save money, shop at local markets and prepare some of your own meals. Another great way to get a real 'taste' of island culture!
Eat where the locals eat. Hotel restaurants are almost universally overpriced. Instead, check out independent local restaurants near tourist areas – they're usually cheaper even when you include the cab ride! Reputable roadside food stands are another option.
Use public transportation. Taxis and limos are expensive in the Caribbean, like everywhere else. Local buses can be a cheap, colorful, and (usually) reliable alternative. In San Juan, there's even a commuter railroad, although it doesn't yet hit the tourist areas.
Use ferries as cheap 'tours.' Narrated harbor tours are grand, but local and commuter ferries often provide the same views (minus the commentary) for a fraction of the price.
What You Need:
Computer for researching travel deals.
Membership in hotel frequent-guest and loyalty programs.
A bit of a sense of adventure!
